It's always difficult to keep fans and newcomers happy in a classic franchise such as this. In the end Battletoads was a decent attempt at reviving the franchise. It's a much larger percentage of the actual gameplay time, though, as a fair number of minigame "levels" take just a minute or two. Beat-'em-up is the game's bread and butter, but comprises fewer than half of the levels. While I loved the feeling of bouncing from one game genre to another, I found myself wishing there were more classic brawling levels.
That gameplay variety has its drawbacks, though.
